Pirates Minor League Outfielder Jose Tabata ‘Hurt’ By Wife’s Baby-Taking Arrest

March 25, 2009

Pittsburgh Pirates minor league outfielder Jose Tabata, whose wife is accused of abducting a 2-month-old child Monday, said in a statement through his team that he was confused by her behavior. “I am hurt, frustrated, and confused by her actions,” the 20-year-old Venezuela native said. “I have and will continue to cooperate with law enforcement officials in anyway that I can. Until I have all of the facts, I cannot comment any further.” Jose Tabata was not involved in his wife’s alleged kidnapping of the infant.

Tabata’s wife, 43-year-old Amalia Tabata Pereira of Bradenton, was arrested Tuesday. She was charged with false imprisonment, interference with child custody and impersonating a social service worker. Today in a Manatee County courtroom, a judge read her charge, told her that her bail is set at $750,000 and said she will be sent to jail in Hillsborough County.

The baby, Sandra Cruz-Francisco, and her mother, Rosa Sirilo-Francisco, were reunited Tuesday evening at Plant City police headquarters. Sandra was unharmed. Sirilo-Francisco said she gave Sandra to a woman who claimed to be an immigration official. The woman told Sirilo-Francisco that she and the child’s father, Andres Cruz, could stay in the United States if the baby was handed over.

Pittsburgh Pirates President Frank Coonelly released a statement today. “The Manatee County Sherriff’s Office confirmed with us last night that Jose was in no way involved in his wife’s alleged kidnapping of an infant girl,” Coonelly said. “Jose was as shocked as the rest of us upon hearing the news and has cooperated fully with law enforcement officials. The Pirates organization will continue to do anything and everything we can to assist and support Jose during this difficult personal time.

“Due to the nature of this ongoing investigation, we can not discuss any specifics of the case, other than to say that, like Jose, we are extremely thankful the young child was safely returned to her family. Our hearts go out to her and her family for the pain they must have endured during the hours that she was missing.”

Tabata, 20, married Pereira, 43, in January 2008, according to Hillsborough County records. Tabata was traded by the Yankees to the Pirates last July in a Trade Deadline deal that netted the Pirates four players in exchange for Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte. He was recently listed as the Pirates’ third-best prospect, according to Baseball America.

Roger Federer on Fatherhood: Becoming a Dad Won’t Affect Tennis

March 22, 2009

Baby Lifestyles has moved.

Roger Federer says fatherhood will not affect his tennis game.Roger Federer doesn’t think becoming a father will effect on his tennis. “I think in a way I always had the dream that once I became No. 1 in the world if I have a child I hope I have it early enough so he can see me playing. So this is very exciting,” Federer said Saturday after his 7-6 (4), 6-4 win over Marc Gicquel of France in the second round of the BNP Paribas Open.

Federer announced on his Web site that he and girlfriend Mirka Vavrinec are expecting their first child this summer. “I think it’s not going to really disturb my mind-set on tennis a whole lot. I’ve always made sure that my schedule is (arranged with time to) get away from tennis a little but and then come back when I’m ready to play again. “If it does something to me, I think it’s going to motivate me to play for a long time.”

Federer and Vavrinec, a former WTA Tour player, met during the 2000 Olympics when both were representing Switzerland and they have been together since. Federer, 27, said he is “completely excited” about impending fatherhood, “but I’ve been thinking about something like this happening for the last two or three years. “For me, this is not a massive shock. But when it does happen (and) your girlfriend-wife is pregnant, it definitely changes your mind-set. All of a sudden you’re hoping everything goes well, whereas before you’re just joking about it. From that respect, I’m excited that the baby comes out healthy and everything goes OK. Other than that, it’s just happiness. And all the people around me, all the people I talk to, everybody is like, ‘Wow, it’s such great news.’ “It’s a nice time. And yeah, the baby is due in summer. Summer is a big word, yeah. I’m not going to say anymore.”

Golfer Annika Sorenstam Pregnant with First Child

March 20, 2009

Annika Sorenstam, one of golf's leading women, has announced that she is pregnant. When Annika Sorenstam “stepped away” from competitive golf at the end of 2008, she made it quite clear that she wanted to explore life outside of golf. And that always included having a family. Sorenstam announced on her blog Thursday that she and her husband, Mike McGee, are expecting their first child this fall. Sorenstam retired from the LPGA Tour last year after 72 victories and 10 majors, saying she wanted to start a business and a family.

Now less than three months into 2009, Sorenstam has been married and has announced she is expecting a baby some time this fall. So just like her best days on the LPGA Tour, Sorenstam saw a goal, went for it and achieved it.

“We have had a lot of exciting changes in the past few months, and adding a new addition to our family later this fall will certainly be at the top of that list,” Sorenstam said. “We are absolutely thrilled and look forward to this new chapter of our lives.”

But Sorenstam’s pregnancy also means something for those who might have been holding out some faint hope that the best female player of the last two decades might just have a change of heart and decide to play some more golf. The pregnancy means Sorenstam definitely isn’t coming back this year, almost assuredly isn’t coming back next year and may very well be gone for good as a player.

Sorenstam wasn’t going to come back and play this year, anyway. As competitive as she was when playing, she wasn’t going to fall for taking just a short time away from the tour. Changing a commitment has never been her style. She was certainly going to take all of 2009 and lay the foundation for a life away from golf. That was going to include a marriage to fiance Mike Magee, with plans to start a family. Toward that end, Sorenstam is doing exactly what she said she wanted to do.
