Rapper M.I.A. Chooses Baby’s Name, It’s Still Wierd: Ikhyd Edgar Arular Bronfman

March 21, 2009

Artist-singer M.I.A. recently took to her blog to vehemently deny reports about her new baby’s name.  His name, she wrote haughtily, is not Ickitt. Or Pickit. Or Whateverickit.

Now TMZ is reporting that according to the actual birth certificate, M.I.A’s baby’s name is Ikhyd, as in Ikhyd Edgar Arular Bronfman.

Guess when he’s older he could always call himself I.R.A. for short.

M.I.A., who’s given name is Mathangi Arulpragasam, was born in England to parents of Sri Lankan descent. The Grammy- and Oscar-nominated rapper revealed her son’s birth on her MySpace blog in early February, saying that the baby is “healthy, fine, beautiful” and the most amazing thing on this planet.

The father is her fiance, musician Benjamin Bronfman.

The singer delivered the baby within days of delivering a scene-stealing performance at the Grammys on Feb. 8.

Top Irish Baby Names for St. Patricks Day Babies

March 11, 2009

St. Patrick’s Day is around the corner and we’re celebrating with Irish baby names! Irish names have a number of origins which are greatly influenced by the historical events that took place. Ireland was converted to Christianity by Saint Patrick and this explains why there has been a persistent preference for Christian, Hebrew and Aramaic names. The names of the 12 Apostles of Christ have always been very popular.

Examples: Patrick, Patricia, Paul, Andrew, Adam, Aaron

The Norse invasion in the Twelfth century and the Cromwellian colonisation in the seventeenth centuries brought still further variety to the first names that were chosen by parents of Irish children. May of the Anglo names that were introduced were originally of Germanic Saxon origin.

Examples: Robert, William, Richard, Gerard

The Gaelic revival that took place in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s saw a return to fashion of many of the native Gaelic names that are drawn from the myths, legends and folklore of the Gaelic culture.

Examples: Shane, Seamus, Ryan, Áine, Brian, Niall

In the latter half of the twentieth century and now, at the start of the twenty-first, the influence of media resources such as television and the internet has meant that names that were never used in Ireland a hundred years ago have now become very popular.

Examples: Kyle, Ethan, Dillon, Cameron, Reece

Grey’s Anatomy Actress Chyler Leigh Selects ‘Aniston’ for Baby Name

March 2, 2009

Actress Chyler Leigh and husband Nathan West have chosen to name their expected daughter Aniston Kay. The baby girl, due May 15, can thank her daddy for the Friends-inspired name. “My husband was actually the one who picked it,” the 26-year-old Grey’s Anatomy star revealed Wednesday on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. “He did a good job.”

When asked by Ellen if actress Jennifer Aniston was his inspiration, Chyler joked “she is like my best friend,” before clarifying, “I’ve never met her actually, no [laughs]. It was just something…my husband and I were trying to look for different names and both of our kids have a traditional and a unique name, so we were kind of just looking for something not as common.”

Impressed by their willingness to defy convention, Ellen joked ”if you have another one, call it ‘DeGeneres.’”

Aniston will join big siblings Noah Wilde, 5, and Taelyn Leigh, 2, at home.

Baby Boy Born During Inauguration Named After President Obama

January 22, 2009

family in Washington State names new son after president Obama. As the nation welcomed a new president in Washington, D.C., a couple in Washington state welcomed the newest member of its family. The Williams Family had the choice to have their son on Martin Luther King Jr. Day or the inauguration day. “It’s a very historical day to have a baby born on this day that’s so emotional for so many Americans,” mother Paula Williams said. Born eight pound, eight ounce Isaac Jabez Obama Williams was born at 8:37 Tuesday morning, just moments before President Obama was sworn into office.

While the birth date may have been planned, the name was not. Proud father Tommy Williams says the name of their new baby is inspired by a man who inspires the nation, “His name was going to be Isaac Jabez Williams and we were looking at the inauguration and we both looked at each other and said we got to, we have to put the stamp on his birth date and let him know his name is part of history.”

A new baby born into a world of new promise, and new possibilities says Tommy, “When I was growing up I had Thurgood Marshal, Martin Luther King, now for my kids they have Barack Obama, President Barack Obama, not president elect, but president and words can’t describe how we feel to see our sons, six boys, that we can tell them that you can be anything you want to be.”

Created by Shona Killoughery-McKenney, a stay-at-home mom of two kids under five years old, Name That Baby! is a new iPhone application that lists thousands of baby names. Parents-to-be simply choose a gender and a starting letter, then give the iPhone a shake.

“I was looking through the Apple store and noticed how few iPhone applications there were for parents,” Killoughery-McKenney explained. “It occurred to me that Name That Baby! would be a fun application for expecting parents and their families and friends. With Name That Baby!, pregnant women don’t even need to buy books of baby names. Now the baby names are right on their iPhone, and they have the convenience of looking for names at the park, at the coffee shop or wherever they happen to have a free moment.”

Name That Baby! delivers a scrollable list of baby names, complete with origins and descriptions, in whatever quantity the user chooses, making a rattle sound while it sorts. Another shake produces additional names, until the perfect name is found.
